BT adds Darktrace ‘immune system’ to Assure

Telecoms firm to augment internal systems with machine learning.

By Jimmy Nicholls

BT has agreed a deal with Darktrace to add the security vendor’s machine learning technology to its portfolio of security services.

Under the scheme, Darktrace’s Enterprise Immune System will be offered to BT’s customers as both an integrated product and as a managed service, whilst BT will use it to bolster the safety of its own systems.

Mark Hughes, president of BT Security, said: "Darktrace’s approach to cyber security aligns and complements our own.

"The addition to our Assure portfolio [of managed services] will strengthen our ability to defend BT and our customers against advanced cyber threats.

"Their machine learning and mathematics are extremely powerful in detecting activity that is abnormal and will be critical to our future cyber security offerings."

The Enterprise Immune System builds up a picture of a customer’s systems over time by analysing how a company and its staff interact with the network, creating a picture of normal behaviour.

Once it has run for several weeks it can begin to flag strange patterns for the attention of the security department, which can then assess them more closely.
