British Gas invests $750K in Big Data

British Gas signs 3-year subscription with WANdisco's Non-Stop Hadoop.

By James Nunns

British Gas has significantly increased their Big Data spends with a three year subscription with WANdisco’s Non-Stop Hadoop worth $750,000.

David Richards, WANdisco Chief Executive, said: "Customers see our Hadoop technology as critical for enterprise big data deployments. Enlarging our footprint with existing customers like British Gas, in addition to gathering new customers, is a very important part of our strategy. This deal clearly demonstrates our ability to expand a small initial big data deployment into a much larger deal."

An initial trial deployment of WANdico’s Non-Stop Hadoop enabled British Gas to capture real-time data from over a million household Smart Meters. WANdico were able to demonstrate performance and scale that could otherwise not have been achieved, in addition to showing cost savings in data storage and processing.

Non-Stop Hadoop will now go into live production and will increase the amount of managed data to more than twice its original level. Real-time analytics from the ‘Connected Homes’ programme is said to bring benefits such as dynamic matching of energy supply with demand patterns.
