Software firm BMC has agreed to acquire database provisioning, patching and administration vendor GridApp Systems. Financial details were not disclosed.
BMC believes that adding GridApp to its arsenal will help it expand its offering of application, server, network and client configuration management to include database automation, enabling full stack end-to-end enterprise application deployment and management, the company said.
The two firms are certainly no strangers to each other – GridApp’s software is already plugged in to BMC’s BladeLogic Server Automation and is said to be in use by joint customers.
The deal will also help BMC expand its Cloud Lifecycle Management platform, enabling IT staff to request and manage database resources in cloud environments.
"The acquisition of GridApp not only adds substantive automation capabilities to our portfolio, but also strengthens the overall BSM platform – creating the most efficient, consistent and comprehensive path to IT value in the industry today," said Scott Fulton, BMC’s vice president and general manager for Service Automation.
In August this year HP acquired GridApp’s rival Stratavia, and this move is likely to increase competition between HP and BMC.

GridApp’s customers include NetApp, Societe Generale, Bank of America, EMI and Lockheed Martin. The company is headquartered in New York.
BMC recently announced better than expected financial results, turning in revenue of $502.3m, up 8.8% from the year ago quarter. Profit surged 39.9% from $94.2m a year ago to $131.8m this time. This is BMC’s third acquisition this year, following Neptuny Software Phurnace Software.
