BBC Sport has released a new free application for iPhone and iPod touch gadgets in the UK in a bid to improve mobile coverage.
The new Sport app allows users to create quick links to one’s favourite sports.
BBC said: "We deliberately set out to use patterns that users recognise from others apps and we’ll continue to do this in the other native features we’ll add to the app over the next year or so."
Available for download from Apple’s App Store, the new hybrid application blends HTML5-based web content with native iOS features, as well as news articles, live text commentaries, football scores,and live streams of BBC radio stations 5 Live and 5 Live Sports Extra.
BBC Sport interactive head Ben Gallop said that the app is a major step forward in the firm’s development and one that recognises the importance of mobile, right now and in the future.
"A third of traffic to the site already comes from mobile – a proportion that rises to more than 40% at the weekend when live sport is going on," Gallop said.
"It won’t be long until most of our audience is accessing our content through handheld devices, which simply reflects the explosion in mobile browsing that is transforming the wider web."

BBC is also working on the Android version of the application, which is expected to be available in the next few weeks.
