Are you being risky with your BYOD security?

62% of business owners and employees are currently using personal mobile devices for work.

By CBR Staff Writer

A study found that two-thirds (62%) of business owners and employees now use personal mobile devices for work, but many of the employees believe that device security is their company’s responsibility.

Though BYOD is a widely accepted business practice, the study revealed that the majority of owners are not interested in investing in mobile device security despite growing concerns.

It also found that the adoption of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) among small-business (SMBs) and enterprises is continuing to increase while many of them believe that it poses no threat to their firm.

The attitude towards protecting the information security of the devices is however playing a key role.

In a consumer security risks survey, 92% of respondents said that they keep sensitive corporative information on smartphones and tablets which they use for both work and personal activities.

Six in ten are worried over the threat of surveillance and data theft through mobile devices, depending on their employers to protect themselves.

As for employers and small-business owners, 32% say there is no danger to their business in staff using personal mobile devices for work.

Representatives of larger businesses are however more concerned about employees losing their mobile devices, with 58% believing that the theft or loss of a device may damage the firm.

SMBs think that the basic security tools provided within free solutions are sufficient and investing extra money on dedicated solutions is of no use.

Kaspersky Lab head of endpoint product management Konstantin Voronkov said:"It is increasingly rare to come across a business professional who doesn’t use their own mobile device for work. A laptop or smartphone enables you to do a large part of your business tasks remotely, from any global location.

"However, the loss of important corporate data via personal devices is a common occurrence, and a negligent attitude towards the security of mobile devices could pose a serious risk to a company’s business. That is why it is important to use a reliable dedicated solution that addresses all modern requirements and market trends."
