Applied Biosystems, Geospiza launch new genetic analysis software

The new cloud-computing software claims to meet computational infrastructure and analysis challenges

By CBR Staff Writer

Applied Biosystems, a division of Life Technologies, and Geospiza, a developer of genetic analysis software, have launched a next-generation genetic analysis software to meet the computational infrastructure and analysis challenges of customers using advanced genomic analysis platforms.

The organizations are combining forces to offer the life-science industry’s first jointly offered genomic analysis cloud-computing software, which is an approach to computing in which scalable and often virtual resources are provided as a service over the internet. This offering leverages the web-scale infrastructure from Amazon Web Services.

The combination of Amazon Web Services and Geospiza is expected to enable scientists using the SOLiD system, Applied Biosystems’s platform for next-generation genomic analysis, to access the most current analysis technologies in real time. Using the massive processing capacity of Amazon Web Services, scientists using the SOLiD system will be able to access the Applied Biosystems mapping tool for sequencing reads that is offered with Geospiza’s genetic analysis software, GeneSifter.

Geospiza, a member of the Applied Biosystems SOLiD software development community, is said to be the first commercial provider to include this software as part of its analysis system. The combination of these industry leaders is believed to offer customers a rapid way to analyze their genetic data accurately, rapidly, and at lower cost.

Rob Arnold, president of Geospiza, said: We are constantly looking for new ways to innovate and expand offerings and services to our customers. We are excited to have the opportunity to work with Amazon and Life Technologies to offer virtually limitless scale and computing power to our customers at an affordable price through this initiative with Applied Biosystems and Amazon.
