Apple has defended against the allegations made a Chinese environmental group which said the iPhone maker’s suppliers are major contributors to the country’s environmental pollution.

Apple in an e-mail reply to the organisations making the allegations said that it was committed to ensuring the highest standards of social responsibility throughout their supply chain.

A 46 page report released by the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs in Beijing detailed alleged pollution caused by Apple’s supply chains in China and provides maps showing more than 20 suspected and confirmed Apple suppliers.

The main reason cited in the report for environmental pollution is the failure of the suppliers to properly dispose of hazardous waste such as copper, nickel and cyanide. Labour violations is also one of the major problems in China.

Apple has indicated that it takes a serious note on such kind of issues, but had found discrepancies in the document by the environmental group.

The company further said it conducts regular audits to its supplier and adhere to strict standards to comply with environmental rules and regulations.

According to media reports, environmental organisations have called on Apple to establish eco-friendly supply chain and accept its social responsibilities.
