Apple has been slapped with a €1.57bn lawsuit by German patent licensing firm IPCom over alleged infringement of 3G technology.
The German patent licensing firm has charged Apple of inappropriately incorporating its patented technology that prioritises emergency calls on mobile networks even if the networks are overloaded and allows implementing 3G mobile standards.
Backed by US fund manager Fortress Investments Group, IPCom noted that the latest demand for damages from Apple covers its alleged breach linked with devices sold in Germany.
Last month, the European Patent Office with held the patent in the wake of challenges from Apple, Nokia, HTC, Vodafone Group and Ericsson.
IPCom also owns about 1,200 mobile-communications patents developed by Bosch and Japan’s Hitachi, while German phone carrier Deutsche Telekom also signed a three-digit-million-euro deal in 2013 for licensing the patents.
The hearing on the latest case is scheduled on 11 February at the Mannheim Regional Court.
