Spend on Google Play nears Apple’s App Store

Apple’s iPhone and iPad users still spend highest on digital content.

By CBR Staff Writer

The amount spent on apps via Google Play is drawing very close to the amount spent on Apple’s App Store, despite iPhone and iPad users spending the highest on digital content.

According to a new report from Distimo the average daily combined spending on the 200 highest revenue generating apps on Apple’s App Store grew from $15m to $18m, while Google reported a rise over the past year from $3.5m to $12m.

Distimo analyst Christel Schoger was cited by the FT as saying that the Apple App Store is still leading in terms of total revenue.

"However, during 2013 Google Play’s piece of the pie was consistently increasing month over month," Schoger said.

Revenue generated via in-app purchases through apps which were earlier available for free in the Apple App Store reached 92% for premium services by November, while it accounted for 98% of overall spending on Android apps.

Gaming apps topped the list of grossing apps on Apple’s App Store, and also made up the most of those on Google Play, while chat app Line generated the highest revenues on Google app store.
