Hackers belonging to the activist group Anonymous, reportedly attacked the website of Interpol, causing it to go down for a span of 20-30 minutes on Tuesday.

This was in retaliation to the arrests of 25 of its suspected supporters across Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Spain.

Though access to the site interpol.int was restored, it was said to be loading very slowly.

It is suspected that the attack was conducted using a botnet, according to the Guardian.

Tweets appeared in Anonymous Twitter accounts which said interpol.int seems to be #TangoDown.

"We can’t say that this surprises us much," it added.

Interpol had carried out the 25 arrests as a part of Operation Unmask, which started in mid-February.

During this operation, computers, mobile phones, credit cards and cash were said to have been seized from Anonymous members aged between 17 and 40.

In January, Anonymous temporarily knocked off the websites of the US DOJ and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in retaliation to the shutdown of the Megaupload file sharing website.
