Anonymous briefly downs CIA website

Recently, it knocked off the websites of the US DOJ and the FBI in retaliation to the shutdown of the Megaupload file sharing website

By CBR Staff Writer

Hacker group Anonymous has claimed responsibility for bringing down the US Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) website on Friday.

However, the website was restored shortly.

A member of Anonymous wrote "CIA Tango down" on YourAnonNews, a Twitter feed used by the group, where "Tango down" refers to an expression used by the US Special Forces after eliminating an enemy.

Last June, an Anonymous- affiliated group, Lulz Security, temporarily managed to shut down the agency’s homepage, according to the BBC.

Anonymous use a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, in which many computers are simultaneously made to visit a website until its servers are overloaded.

In January, Anonymous temporarily knocked off the websites of the US DOJ and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in retaliation to the shutdown of the Megaupload file sharing website.

Anonymous group also claimed on Friday to have briefly hacked the website of the Mexican chamber of mines Camimex.

The group said they were exposing the e-mails of Camimex since the mining industry is robbing the miners and targeting the lands of the Wixarika.
