E-commerce firm Amazon will acquire the American comic app developer comiXology.

Headquartered in New York, comiXology offers a cloud-based digital comics platform that enables users to search, buy, and read comic books and graphic novels.

The company also develops applications that help users to read comics either on the internet or personal devices running on Android, Windows, Kindle or iOS.

The acquisition is expected to help the e-commerce giant expand its digital book service, particular in the comics sector.

ComiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger said the company aims to spread the love of comics and graphic novels.

"There is no better home for comiXology than Amazon to see this vision through," Steinberger added. "Working together, we look to accelerate a new age for comic books and graphic novels."

The transaction is expected to be completed during the second quarter of 2014, subject to certain closing conditions.

Amazon Content Acquisition and Independent Publishing vice president David Naggar said: "We look forward to investing in the business, growing the team, and together, bringing comics and graphic novels to even more readers."
