Amazon releases Kindle for PC application

Whispersync technology to automatically save and synchronise bookmarks

By CBR Staff Writer

Amazon.com has released Kindle for PC, a free application that allows readers around the world to read Kindle books on their personal computers (PC). The US Kindle Store currently offers more than 360,000 books, including new releases.

With the new release, Kindle books can now be read on the Kindle, Kindle DX, Apple iPhone, iPod touch and on PC. Kindle for PC features Whispersync technology that automatically saves and synchronises bookmarks and last page read across devices. Whispersync also helped make the Kindle for iPhone application.

According to Amazon, with Kindle for PC, readers can purchase, download and read several books available in the Kindle Store; read the beginning of any book for free before they buy; access their library of previously purchased Kindle books stored on Amazon’s servers and view notes and highlights marked on Kindle, Kindle DX, iPhone, and iPod touch.

In addition, readers can choose from more than 10 different font sizes and adjust words per line; read books in full color; zoom in and zoom out of text; and turn pages with a finger swipe (available in a future release for Windows 7 users), the company said.

Ian Freed, vice president of Amazon Kindle, said: Kindle for PC is the perfect companion application for customers who own a Kindle or Kindle DX. Kindle for PC is also a great way for people around the world to access a huge selection from the Kindle Store and read the most popular books of today even if they don’t yet have a Kindle.
