Amazon has rolled out the new virtual currency dubbed ‘Amazon Coins’ for its UK and German consumers of Kindle Fire series of tablets, with a free offer 400 coins worth £4.

Users can spend the virtual currency on buying apps and in-app purchases for the Kindle Fire tablets.

The online retail major is selling virtual currency at a bulk discount, with up to 10% for consumers who buy about 10,000 coins at once.

Amazon.com Marketing Senior Manager Rob Pulciani said that the company is extending Amazon Coins to the UK and Germany as well.

"As a thank you to existing and new Kindle Fire owners in the UK and Germany, customers will get free Amazon Coins deposited directly into their accounts so they can experience how easy it is to shop with Coins," Pulciani said.

"Customers will be able to use Amazon Coins to purchase apps, games, and a broad range of in-app items in the Amazon.co.uk Appstore, the Amazon.de App-Shop, and on Kindle Fire."

Amazon is also offering 400 free coins to customers who have already placed orders for the new Kindle Fire HDX 7" and Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" currently available in the UK and Germany.

Last year, Amazon reported 50% rise in the number of app downloads during Thanksgiving week than an average week, while during the week after Christmas, customers bought and downloaded 600% more apps compared to other week during 2012.
