Akamai to acquire cyber security firm Prolexic

It would boost Akamai’s security offerings for enterprises.

By CBR Staff Writer

Web based solutions provider Akamai Technologies has acquired DDoS prevention specialist Prolexic Technologies for $370m, as part of its efforts to boost security offerings for enterprises.

Akamai CEO Tom Leighton said that the deal would allow integration of Akamai’s security and performance platform with Prolexic’s DDoS mitigation solutions for data centre and enterprise applications protection.

"Any company doing business on the Internet faces an evolving threat landscape of attacks aimed at disrupting operations, defacing the brand, or attempting to steal sensitive data and information," Leighton said.

"We believe that Prolexic’s solutions and team will help us achieve our goal of making the Internet fast, reliable, and secure."

The latest deal would allow Akamai to offer a complete portfolio of security technologies designed to protect an enterprise’s Web and IP infrastructure against application-layer, network-layer and data centre attacks launched via the Internet.

Prolexic CEO Scott Hammack said that currently, business is defined by the availability, security and latency of Internet-facing applications, data and infrastructure.

"Being able to rely on one provider for Internet performance and security greatly simplifies resolution of network availability issues and offers clients clear lines of accountability," Hammack added.
