Adobe releases ColdFusion in Amazon cloud

Offers database synchronisation with Adobe AIR to access applications regardless of internet connectivity

By CBR Staff Writer

Adobe systems has unveiled ColdFusion 9, ColdFusion Builder Beta 2, and a private beta of the new ColdFusion 9 in the cloud that will run in the Amazon web services environment and enable more developers to access the power of ColdFusion as a hosted service.

According to Adobe, ColdFusion 9 increases developer productivity, integrates with complex enterprise environments, hastens the development cycle and delivers interactive experience to users. ColdFusion Builder Beta 2 is a successor to the Eclipse based ColdFusion integrated development environment (IDE) used to develop ColdFusion applications quickly.

Added features of ColdFusion 9 include an Adobe AIR application for managing multiple ColdFusion servers from one location. It also offers local and remote database synchronisation with Adobe AIR, giving users access to applications regardless of internet connectivity. Its integration with Hibernate’s object rational mapping (ORM) provides developers with database independent applications, the companies said.

David Wadhwani, general manager and vice president of the platform business unit at Adobe, said: “Today, with the new cloud-based offering, developers and IT professionals can choose the best and most effective method for their company when deploying rich internet applications.”

According to Adobe, the new instance based licensing with ColdFusion 9 allows developers to install ColdFusion 9 on virtual instances in the cloud environment of their choice to prototype, develop, test and host ColdFusion applications. An Amazon machine image of ColdFusion 9 is available as a private beta, which uses Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) technologies. ColdFusion is compatible with Adobe Flash platform.

Reportedly, ColdFusion is available in three editions. ColdFusion 9 Enterprise Edition is a system that is used to deliver multiple websites and applications on one or more servers, or on existing J2EE application server installations, for $ 7,499 per 2 CPUs. ColdFusion 9 Standard can be used for small to medium sized business, which operate on single application, and is available for $ 1,299 per 2 CPUs.

ColdFusion 9 Developer Edition is used for development purpose only and is free. Owners of valid ColdFusion 7 and 8 can avail low cost upgrade pricing starting from $ 649. ColdFusion 9 is available online from Adobe Store and through Adobe’s network of partners and resellers.
