8 in 10 Brits prefer biometric security

Sales of Apple’s iPhone 5s reaching more than 10 million has reportedly fuelled the adoption of biometrics.

By CBR Staff Writer

Eight out of ten Brits are ready to opt for biometric security measures such as fingerprint scanners in place of passwords, according a study from Intelligent Environments.

According to its latest Future Password Index, among those who were sampled, fingerprint technology was found to be the most popular biometric method with 53% prefering the technology.

Iris scanners emerged as the next preferable method with 33% keen on the technology. This was followed by facial recognition, Electrocardiogram (ECG) heartbeat monitors and voice verification.

Intelligent Environments CTO Clayton Locke said: ‘In the battle of the biometrics, it’s not surprising that fingerprint scanners come out on top as more people are getting used to them being built into mobile devices.

"But what the Future Password Index really reveals is the consumer demand for these technologies. Banks like Barclays are already looking at the future of passwords.

"Other UK banks need to start looking at how they can satisfy the rapidly escalating customer demand for biometrics by looking at implementing a range of options that best suit their customers’ needs."
