5 companies boosting business with Apple iOS 9

How are Microsoft, Apperian, MobileIron, SOTI and Yext taking advantage of updates to Apple's OS?

By Alexander Sword

This year’s September event from Apple carried some surprising announcements, such as the Apple pencil, and some that were already widely anticipated on the Apple rumour circuit. One of the key announcements was the launch of iOS 9, which will be rolled out on 16 September and carries a host of new features.

Several companies have already announced how they will take advantage of the new features.

1. Microsoft

Microsoft‘s Office apps are taking advantage in particular of the new features Slide Over and Split View, which allow you to have two apps open on the screen at once. One update will allow you to tap on a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file attached to an email message and have Outlook automatically launch the corresponding app alongside Outlook, ready for editing.

You can therefore edit the document while still being able to view the email message. After your edits are made, you tap the back button and the document is attacked to a new email message in Outlook, ready to be sent.

2. Apperian

Apperian is providing day of support for iOS 9 and making resources with best practice available to help those being activated.

As the new operating system requires all enterprise apps and extensions to be signed with explicit provisioning profiles, Apperian’s platform allows the company to upgrade the app policies code-free.

This automates the re-signing with an explicit provisioning profile before notifying users of the updated version.

3. SOTI

SOTI has also announced same-day support for iOS 9, with a wide range of updates allowing users to fully take advantage. These include the ability to enforce app network usage restrictions, management of pre-installed apps and an app whitelisting feature. This allows applications to be installed on managed devices even after the App Store is disabled.

In addition, it adds trusted app verification; MobiControl can be configured to implicitly trust and install any developer applications without the user being needed to manually ‘trust’ them. The expanded setup assistant support allows the user to tailor Setup Assistant UI screens to restrict certain configurations, such as Touch ID, Apple Pay, Zoom and Apple Watch pairing.

4. MobileIron

MobileIron put out a whitepaper to guide enterprises through the move to iOS 9. One of the features MobileIron will be able to assist with is the conversion of a user-installed app into a corporate-liable app.

This can be done in the background without any user data being lost. Previously this would have required an end-user to manually delete and reinstall the app through an EMM enterprise app store. MobileIron expects to announced more support for iOS 9 in coming months.

5. Yext

Yext is using the changes coming to mobile search to help brands boost and optimise their apps. The new search process will index content directly from apps in search results and introduce deep linking between web and app content.

Yext will launch new features Screens, Screens Store Locator and Screens Reporting. These create a location layer for a brand’s app to ensure that their mobile presence is optimised for the new operating system. Customers of Yext Enterprise will therefore be able to ensure that more traffic goes from their apps to their local stores.
