5 best mobile running apps for Android

Feeling inspired by the London Marathon? Here are some great new apps to get you active.

By Vinod

Last weekend saw 37,000 runners pounding the streets of London as they looked to complete 26.2 miles for charity, or just for the challenge. Over a million people went to support the race along the route, with many more on television, so if you were one of those, or are feeling inspired to get out and get fit, here are five great apps to help you on your way…

RunKeeper

RunKeeper

One of the most popular apps out there at the moment, RunKeeper currently boasts 28 million users worldwide. Allowing you to track and monitor your workouts, RunKeeper also offers support for cycling and hiking, using the GPS signal in your phone to provide a comprehensive overview of your route.

The app is also set up to work with a number of existing devices, including Garmin and Fitbit trackers, and lets you share your results online to get even more detailed reports.

As the name suggests, MapMyRun lets users track and upload their runs into a massive online database, which others can then take on and challenge. You can also track calorie count, elevation, and pace of a run, which can then be uploaded into a training programme to help you get up to your first 5k, 10k or marathon.

There is also a specialised separate MapMyRide app for cyclists, which offers a wider collection of routes and challenges, as well as the option to sync workouts to cycling-specific devices.

Runtastic

Runtastic

One of the most established names around when it comes to fitness apps, Runtastic includes the option to create an in-depth training program which can provide real-time tracking as you run or cycle. It also provides several cool audio tricks, including the option for virtual crowds to cheer you along, as well as a Voice Coach feature which will give you feedback as you work out.

The app also has its own YouTube channel, which offers further workout tips and tricks, and recently partnered with workout music producer Power Music to provide some inspirational tunes to run to.

Nike+ Running

Nike+ Running

One for Nike aficionados, this app is designed with the tick-based company’s kit in mind. Featuring a bold and colourful interface, Nike+ Running lets you keep track with your friends and training partners to keep each other motivated or set challenges without the need for any other sensors.

If you feel yourself slacking and are in need of some extra motivation, the app lets you a widget to your phone’s home screen to remind you when you ran last, along with your total mileage, offering a quick mental boost which should help keep your training ticking over.

Zombies, Run!

Zombies, Run!

Offering a slightly different take on ‘motivation’, this app puts you right in the heart of a survival film in an attempt to up your speed. Turning your jog around the park into a race for your life, Zombies, Run! uses your headphones to immerse you in a zombie apocalypse where your efforts will help save the human race. With nearly a million downloads already, this is one of the most innovative ways to keep up going when the going gets tough.
