SOFTKEY TO BUY COMPTON NEWMEDIA

SoftKey International Inc is buying Compton’s NewMedia Inc and Compton’s Learning Co, the former being the company that caused consternation when it claimed a patent on one of the most basic and fundamental multimedia technologies. Publisher Tribune Co, Minneapolis is selling the businesses for securities valued at about $106.5m, and SoftKey, Cambridge, Massachusetts, will assume up to $17m of debt in the acquisition. Tribune also offered to make a strategic $150m investment in SoftKey if the latter is successful in buying the Learning Co, and SoftKey says this would enable it to increase the cash element of its offer.
