Wayne, Pennsylvannia-based Soft-Switch Inc has come out with synchronisation software for cc:Mail, which links the cc:Mail directory with the directories of other electronic mail systems in a wide area network. Directory Synchronization/cc:Mail, as the software is called, adds to Soft-Switch’s other synchronisation software electronic mail products, which include Profs, DEC Distributed Data Services and Wang Office. Directory synchronisation enables users on different electronic mail systems to locate users throughout the network, and changes to the directories of individual mail systems are automatic ally distributed to all synchronised directories on the network. Soft-Switch says it is also working on a directory synchronisation for Banyan Systems Inc’s Vines as well as a similar program for IBM’s Office Vision/MVS. Other electronic mail vendors plan to build their own directory synchronisation capability using the Soft-Switch open protocol – these include Lotus for Lotus Notes, MicroSoft for MicroSoft Mail for PC Networks, H&W Systems for SYSM, and Enable Software for Higgins. Soft-Switch believes that its directory synchronisation products represent the only practical answere now available to the directory problems facing large companies. The DS/cc:Mail is set to ship next month.
