iOS 11 Screenshot Alerts – Rumoured Apple iPhone update probably untrue

iOS 11 may send notifications to users when messages are screenshot, according to a new rumour.

By Joe Clark

Have you ever taken a screenshot of a message on your iPhone? A new rumour has been making the rounds on Twitter alleging that iOS 11 will notify users when this happens.

If you’re the kind of person (e.g. everyone) who takes screenshots of messages to send to your friends, you may want to get used to copy and pasting, or avoid the iOS 11 update.

The rumour spread on Twitter after user @FreddyAmazin who tweeted about the possibility for iOS 11 screenshot alerts, which currently has almost 15,000 retweets and 25,000 favourites.

It’s unclear whether there is any substance to the rumour but it seems to have originally come from user @realjayway who tweeted on the 14th December about, “iOS 11 coming with iMessage screenshot alerts.” Followed by “it has not been officially confirmed yet. But it was a idea my team and I brought to the engineers of apple – J.W,” on the same day.

Snapchat was the first to pioneer this technology and began notifying users if their snaps had been snapped several years ago, as it defeated the purpose of the temporary image service. In November of last year false rumours began to spread that Instagram would be doing the same.

However, the Facebook owned, Instagram does notify users if their personal messages have been snapped.

Following this revelation, the users of the social media site Twitter went into overdrive to express their feelings on the matter.

Of course the rumour could turn out to be total nonsense, but where there’s smoke, there is occasionally fire.

However, given that there is no evidence that this would happen, and that it would be a big change for Apple to implement a feature like this, it is almost certainly untrue.
