SMITH CORONA MOVES MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS TO MEXICO

New Canaan, Connecticut-based Smith Corona Corp is moving its manufacturing operations to Mexico from Cortland, New York to take advantage of much lower labour costs: the electronic typewriter company said it will take $15m in pre-tax charges in connection with the plan, which will take place in the next 60 days; worldwide engineering, product design, customer service and administrative support activities will remain in Cortland; some 370 of the 775 people at the New York base will retain their jobs.
