Smartphones preferred over laptops: Study

For young adults in the US and three other countries, smartphones take precedence over laptops, desktops or tablets

By CBR Staff Writer

A study by Cisco revealed that adults between the young adults across multiple countries prefer smartphones over other devices like laptops and tablets.

However, the survey found that laptops were the first choice of preference for youngsters in 14 out of 18 countries.

The study found that the majority of young adults use their phone to check their email, social media and texts before they even get out of bed.

A third of respondents said that if they had to choose only one device they would choose the smartphone. However, slightly more than a third of respondents favoured laptops.

Adults between the ages of 18 and 30 said they preferred the smartphone because it’s more versatile and compact than a laptop.

Cisco global research director Neil Wu Becker said that the smartphone is now regarded as more than a simple tool.

"It’s more of an appendage that satisfies our craving to stay connected, and contributes to our sense of well being," said Becker.

South Korea was found to be the country with the largest percentage of users, with 54% of them opting for the smartphones, followed by 29% for desktops, 11% for tablets and 4% for laptops.
