Global smartphone applications processor market grew 65% year-over-year growth in Q2 2011, reaching $1.7bn, according to Strategy Analytics.

Acording to the markket resaerch firm’s "Smartphone Apps Processor Market Share: Qualcomm Takes Over 50 Percent Revenue Share in Q2 2011,"semiconductor company Qualcomm took more than 51% revenue share in the smartphone applications processor market in Q2 2011.

Also during Q2 2011, Qualcomm, Samsung, Texas Instruments, Marvell and NVIDIA featured in the top-five smartphone applications processor share rankings in terms of both unit shipments and revenue, said Strategy Analytics.

It added that Texas Instruments fell to number three, behind Qualcomm and Samsung, reflecting weakness at the core of Nokia, its major customer.

Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service director Stuart Robinson said Qualcomm gained 50% revenue share in Q2 2011 on the strength of its dominant market position in the Android ecosystem and Snapdragon processor momentum.

Strategy Analytics estimates that Qualcomm applications processors powered over 60% of the Android smartphones shipped in Q2 2011.

Robinson added, "In contrast, Qualcomm competitors Broadcom and ST-Ericsson so far failed to capitalize on smartphone growth in order to build a strong position in the applications processor market, despite their similar integrated approach."

Senior Analyst Sravan Kundojjala said dual-core processors accounted for 14% of total smartphone applications processors shipped in Q2 2011, which helped vendors such as NVIDIA and Samsung move up in rankings.

"Strategy Analytics foresees dual-core processors helping the overall applications processors market to maintain healthy average selling prices (ASPs) and sustaining revenue growth in years to come," Kundojjala said.
