SmartCard International Inc, New York, has found a medical application for its self-powered UltiCard Smart Card: the card, part of a new medical information system, will be tested in field trials under a collaborative arrangement with Methodist Hospital’s Institute for Preventive Medicine and Baylor College of Medicine, both in Houston; the hospitals, specialising in research and treatment of heart disease, will use the 64Kb reprogrammable UltiCard, which includes keyboard and display, to help patients to track food intake, including fat and cholesterol, body weight, exercise, drugs and behaviour data, and patients with heart disease, diabetes and hypertension will also use it as part of a medical regimen.
