SMART CARDS: GEMPLUS, SCHLUMBERGER IN JAVA CLUB

The two leading manufacturers of embedded microprocessor Smart Cards, Gemplus SA and Schlumberger Ltd have decided to standardize Java for Smart Cards, and to that end have formed the Java Card Forum. The objectives of the new group are to promote the Java Card application programming interface as an industry standard for Smart Cards and facilitate exchange of technical information between participants. It says its main goal is to ensure that the write once-run anywhere capabilities Java provides to Smart Cards will continue to evolve to meet the needs of all types of Smart Card application. It will also provide technical input to chipmakers working on chips embedded with Java Card.
