Smart toothbrush can give you brushing tips and analyse tooth hygiene

Oral-B's SmartSeries 7000 is the first 'connected toothbrush' in the smart home vision.

By Ben Sullivan

A ‘smart toothbrush’ was showcased this year at Mobile World Congress as part of the smart home in the connected city display.

The Oral-B 7000 connects to owners’ smartphones via bluetooth 4.0, and collects data which is then transferred to the smartphone about brushing habits. Oral-B’s owner, P&G, says that it is the first among many "quantified self" products it hopes to introduce to the market.

The toothbrush will launch globally in June this year, and will retail at around £199, with the corresponding app available on Android and iOS.

Michael Cohen-Dumani, speaking to Mobile World Daily, said that the firm was looking at health products that use these sort of connections to help users get a better understanding of their health needs.

"The quantified self is about producing sustained change. We think oral health care is going to be the beginning of the quantified self," he said.

Also on display above the sinks at the GSMA’s connected city display was a smart mirror, which is gesture controlled and allows the user to scroll through news, weather, notifications and other information whilst at the sink.
