Dotster’s legal representation wrote to the Internet Corp for Assigned Names and Numbers, which to an extent regulates the domain business, early last month, to demand that ICANN reconsider its decision to permit the WLS, it emerged this week.

The WLS would allow VeriSign’s domain registry business to sell users the opportunity to have the first shot at registering a domain when it expires. The company is using technology licensed from SnapNames Inc, which will share the revenue.

Critics, including Dotster, say that the service will kill existing waiting list business models while giving VeriSign all the action. Those in favor say existing business models favor only the tech-savvy user, and say any registrar can offer WLS.

Dotster’s lawyer demands ICANN reconsider its approval of WLS, which came last August, saying that the organization broke its own policies when it made the decision, by not getting a consensus agreement among registrars.
