Researchers from Drexel University hacked the external LED lighting system of a 29-story skyscraper cira centre in downtown Philadelphia to play what is said to be ‘World’s Largest Tetris Game’.
Led by the university’s computer science professor Frank Lee, the research team said it was looking to create a larger-than-life Tetris game to be played during the ongoing tech week.
Researchers used the north and the south side of the tower, and allowed competitors to play the game using joysticks that were connected to a computer to transmit the data through a 4G network within the skyscraper.
The signals translated the commands to the skyscraper’s external LED lighting system, generating large scale versions of Tetris game on the facade.
Lee told the New York Times:"Technology has sort of made us isolated from each other. I want us to be with each other, and play with each other."
Earlier, the team had used the same building and hacked its 1,400 LED lights to play a game of Pong, achieving the Guinness Record for the world’s largest architectural videogame display.
However, the latest Tetris game is claimed to be two times larger in size compared to the Pong display.
