Equipped with a Windows XP PC, a broadband connection of at least 1mb, and supporting software, users of the service can download a wide variety of TV content ranging from Hollywood blockbusters and classic movie titles to sporting highlights and breaking news.

Users can expect a reasonable picture too. With a variable bit rate of 860 kbps and a resolution of 540 x 432, it doesn’t promise DVD or HD quality, but still offers a clear viewing experience.

Users signed up to Sky Movies 1 and 2, will have access to over 200 movies. The service also allows them to set preferences and receive movie recommendations, create a library of their favorite moves, and manage viewing in the family through the use of parental controls.

Users signed up to Sky Sports 1 and 2, can download sporting news and highlights and create a personalized sports clip file by setting their favorite sport, team or event as a preference.

The time it takes to complete downloads, depends on the file size and the user’s connection.

Sky’s new offering follows an identifiable trend in the media industry that has seen increased viewer choice and control through the introduction of extended services providing downloadable TV content.
