Customers will need a Sky HD box which will cost GBP299, and will then pay an additional GBP10 per month for their subscription.

Sky says its new service will deliver sharper, brighter and more vibrant pictures and is promising a genuine viewing revolution. Rumors concerning the service have been flying for some months and have already generated considerable interest.

Among the first Sky HD channels will be Sky Sport HD, including coverage of the Premiership, international cricket and rugby. There will also be two movie and a number of documentary channels.
