Sky mobile service to launch in 2016

Telefónica UK deal will see Sky able to offer a quad-play package.

By Alexander Sword

Sky has confirmed that it will be launching a mobile offering, following the agreement of a new partnership with Telefónica UK.

The multi-year partnership will see Sky offering mobile voice and data services in the UK for the first time. The communications provider will have wholesale access to 2G, 3G and 4G services across Telefónica UK’s nationwide network.

The new service is expected to be launched in 2016. Sky’s new deal will allow it to offer a quad-play package of home phone, broadband, TV and mobile.

The move comes amid continuing talks regarding BT acquiring UK mobile operator EE, which would allow it to offer its own quad-play package. Meanwhile, BT CEO Gavin Patterson today announced BT’s plans to deliver faster broadband in the UK using deployment of its "G.fast" technology, upgrading the infrastructure from superfast to ultrafast.

Jeremy Darroch, Group Chief Executive, Sky said: "As the UK’s leading brand for home entertainment and communications, Sky has a proven ability to launch new services, at scale. We know our 11.5 million customers trust Sky to offer them the best quality and choice and have an appetite to take more from us.

"Through our partnership with Telefónica UK, we can build on our expertise in content, innovation and service to launch a range of exciting new services and exploit the opportunities for growth in the fast-changing mobile sector."
