Gerry Whent, chief executive of the Vodafone Group Plc and already holder of a CBE, scored the most prestigeous title for the British information technology industry in the New Year’s Honours List, being appointed a knighthood for his services to mobile telecommunications. Next came Paul Bosonnet, deputy chairman of British Telecommunications Plc, who has been created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, also for services to telecommunications, and Eric Clark, chairman of BICC Cables Ltd, who was appointed a CBE for his service to the cable industry. OBEs went to John Rigg, chairman of Vega Group Plc and Triad Special Systems Ltd for his services to the space industry and Christopher Wheddon, director of software and systems integration at British Telecom for his services to the development of speech technology. Diana Clark, training and certification instructor at GEC-Marconi Defence Systems is made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to the defence industry. The shop floor manager at Siemens Plc, Roland Giles, was also appointed an MBE for services to the manufacturing and defence industries, as was James Manderson, lately corporate communications manager at Digital Equipment Scotland, both for his service to the electronics industry and to charities. Again for services to the electronics industry, John Pearce, business manager at GEC Plc’s Future Frigate Marconi Radar Control Systems Ltd subsidiary was also appointed an MBE.
