Sir Bryan Carsberg, Director General of Telecommunications, has deferred the deadline by which the two cellular service providers, Cellnet and Racal-Vodafone, are obliged to provide inter-system roaming until December 29: the previous deadline had been set for last month – exactly five years after the licences were granted – but Sir Bryan now considers that the costs associated with making each network able to support the users of the other outweighed the present advantages: by setting the date for the end of this year, Sir Bryan is nonetheless reminding Cellnet and Vodafone that participation in the pan-European Groupe Speciale Mobile system does require roaming between operators in different countries.
