AT&T Co, Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co and the Chinese Ministry of Post and Telecommunications yesterday activated service on the world’s first fibre optic cable system to link China and Japan: the 782-mile system links landing stations in Miyazaki, Japan and Nanhui near Shanghai, China and because for half its length, the cable is in water less than 600 feet deep, the cable is buried about three feet into the continental shelf; it consists of two fibre pairs operating at 560Mbps and connects with existing fibre systems in Asia and the Pacific Ocean, giving China a fibre optic gateway to the world.
