Intel Corp and Microsoft Corp claim to have solved the seemingly intractable problem of having different protocols for displaying digital television pictures on TV sets, PCs and other digital devices. Together with other partners, the two say they’ll announce within 90 days a way of enabling digital content written using the rules or APIs to be displayed on devices adhering to either interlaced or progressive scan digital display mechanisms, by means of a set of rules or APIs that are independent of the underlying protocol. They expect broadcasters, transport technology companies and PC content authors alike to use the rules to generate a single version of their content that can be displayed using either protocol.
