Singapore Telecommunications Ltd has chosen Hewlett-Packard Singapore (Sales) Pte Ltd, Mitsui & Co Ltd, Fujitsu Ltd and Philips Singapore Pte Ltd as its video-on-demand partners and equipment providers under a $6.2m contract. Japanese trading giant Mitsui is the consortium leader, Fujitsu is the systems integrator and will supply the Asynchronous Transfer Mode switch for the tria, Hewlett-Packard will supply its HP MediaStream Server video server running Intermedia database software from Sybase Inc, and Philips will be doing the set-top boxes. Sybase’s Intermedia architecture software comprises the Intermedia Server for control and integration, Gain Momentum for multimedia authoring, and Gain Interplay for set-top box integration; in the $14m trial, 300 homes will be linked to the system, the first 20 by the third quarter. Services to be offered include first-run movies and news, educational programmes and a home shopping system.
