The vicious personal computer price wars have done no harm to Singapore’s economy, where insatiable demand for disk drives is keeping the factories humming, Reuter reports: Singapore accounts for about half the world’s demand for drives, and forecasts record output of hard drives this year; record shipments are expected, especially for 2.5 and 3.5 drives; Irvine, California-based Western Digital Corp, which manufactures all its disk drives in Singapore, said its production rose to 940,000 units in the July to September period, double the 470,000 drives made a year ago, and overall, Singapore’s disk drive output, representing over a quarter of the electronics sector, is expected to reach 17m units this year, up from 14m drives in 1991; electronics accounts for a third of all manufacturing in Singapore.
