Proving it has a lot of ground to cover with its Merced and Windows NT makeover, Silicon Graphics Inc exited its financial 1998 with a net fourth quarter loss of $220m – including a $205m charge for truncating its supercomputer business – compared with a profit of $102.4m last time on revenue which declined 33% to $773.5m from $1.16bn although revenue increased 9% sequentially. The loss was even worse than analysts had estimated. Net Loss for the year was a whopping $459.6m compared with a profit of $78.5m last time on revenue which declined 13% to $3.1bn from $3.66bn. The company claims its server business grew 23% sequentially.
