The company’s software allows person-to-person videoconferences to take place over IP networks. CEO Brad Treat claims the system passes easily through firewalls and has an exceptionally low degree of lag.
There’s a sweet spot in the market not currently addressed. Somewhere below Polycom, but above NetMeeting, said Treat.
Polycom Inc provides Rolls Royce videoconferencing for C-level meetings, Treat said, while Microsoft Corp’s NetMeeting software does not allow sufficient video quality for business communications.
The system comprises client software that must be installed at both sides of the conference, as well as a service for connecting calls and monitoring network latency, which is handled by SightSpeed.
Treat said the special sauce is that the software uses SightSpeed’s proprietary video compression codecs and communications protocols, rather than the more usual industry standard H.323.
The quality comes at a price in terms of processor time and bandwidth. Treat said that a 700MHz machine is the minimum recommended to run the software, which is compressing 30 frames per second of video in real time.
SightSpeed will offer a free service that allows 10 minutes of use per day, a $10 per seat per month service that allows more minutes, and a $29.95 per month per seat license that allows unlimited use.
