SIERRA, MPR FORM CELLULAR PACKET DATA MODEM FIRM

By CBR Staff Writer

San Jose, California-based Sierra Semiconductor Corp is joining forces with MPR Teltech Ltd of Burnaby, British Columbia to create a new company, Sierra Wireless Inc in Vancouver, British Columbia. The new company will focus initially on the development of portable computer modems and modem sub-systems built to Cellular Digital Packet Data specifications. The new standard, developed by the US cellular industry, is an open specification for high speed wireless transmission of packetised data over the existing cellular network, fitting the packets into the gaps between speech on the cellular net, thereby giving the cellular operators an additional opportunity to exploit their franchises.
