SIERRA CHANGES NAME TO PMC-SIERRA TO CAPITALIZE ON BRAND

By CBR Staff Writer

Sierra Semiconductor Corp will, as of tomorrow, officially change its name to PMC-Sierra Inc, the company it bought back in 1992 (CI No 2,495), to ‘reflect its focus on the high speed networking market opportunity’, the company said. PMC-Sierra provides high speed internetworking systems with particular emphasis on Asynchronous Transfer Mode, Sonet/SDH, T1/E1 and Ethernet applications. It is also one of the 40 co-founders of the Saturn Development Group, which was established to define and develop standards for high speed networking applications. Jim Diller, chief executive and chairman of the newly named PMC-Sierra said the PMC-Sierra name had become synonymous with networking systems, and therefore it made sense to change the whole company over and capitalize on the brand name.
