The first networks are scheduled to start operating as early as December 2001. Siemens will be equipping Bharti’s mobile networks in the Calcutta and Madhya Pradesh regions with turnkey GSM radio and switching technology, microwave radio relay systems, and GPRS services. The order for mobile radio networks in the Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Gujarat regions includes the delivery of GSM technology, radio relay systems, and intelligent network services.
No financial details were provided by Siemens regarding the Bharti deal. The company did, however, release the figures involved in another contract it was awarded this week by the Chinese mobile operator China Mobile Communications Corp. (CMCC). This contract, which will involve the expansion of the GSM network in the Sichuan Province is worth $77 million and is scheduled to be completed by May 2002.
