It often pays to get into a market at a time when it is in such turmoil that the fainter-hearted regard it as too bigger risk, and Siemens AG has reached agreement with the leading electronics enterprise in Jugoslavia, Iskra, for the manufacturing of telecommunications equipment – expected to be the EWSD digital telephone exchange, which the government plans to major on for the Jugoslav telephone system. The Iskratel joint venture will be 52%-owned by Iskra, 48% by Siemens and it looks to have about 1,500 employees at its base in Ljubliana and being doing $100m a year by the early 1990s, some of it exported.
