Many of the figures are pretty suspect and depend on arbitrary definitions – and heavily on currency fluctuations – but Siemens AG is still the largest European-based data processing company according to the latest annual Datamation survey of the European computer industry, with Ing C Olivetti & Co SpA catching up; in 1986, Siemens had a turnover of $4,387m, an increase of 10.5%, compared with Olivetti’s $3,865m, a 14.5% increase on 1985; Groupe Bull and Nixdorf Computer AG rank third and fourth with Philips NV just shading STC Plc for fifth place; the fastest growers were Rank Xerox, up 70%, and Atlantic Computers Plc, up 67.4%, with Cap Gemini Sogeti, Norsk Data A/S and British Telecom Plc all advancing by over 30%; comparing European revenues only and including US companies the top five, in order, are IBM, Siemens, DEC, Olivetti and Bull; Compagnie Generale d’Electricit is the biggest climber, up four places to 13, while L M Ericsson, falls four to 12; surprisingly, troubled Data General re-enters the Top 25 list.
