In a recent decision the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), an umbrella organization of all the major international standardization bodies for third generation mobile radio (3G), acknowledged TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) as a global standard for UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System).

This decision has given the technology a massive boost in its competition with the high chip rate transmission methodsFDD (Frequency Division Duplex or Wideband-CDMA) and TDD (Time Division Duplex) within UMTS. The new technology was designed by Siemens IC Mobile and China Academy of Telecommunications Technology (CATT). It is also known as TDD Low Chip Rate.

Within the next few monthes, the test network will enable mobile network operators in China to run the first trials with TD-SCDMA. The companies are aiming for an early 2002 launch of the technology.
