Siemens Computer Systems is readying a multi-operating system server for the year 2000. The German electronics giant is to merge its BS/2000 mainframe operating system and an unspecified Unix OS into one box by 2000. The company says it will offer a multiple operating system – using BS/2000, Solaris and NT – by 2001. Dr Joseph Reger, the director of enterprise computing, says that the advantages of the massive multiprocessor servers – he is envisaging the system using up to 64 of Intel Corp’s IA-64 EPIC architecture chips – will be savings in administration and implementation costs. The servers will act as a single administration system, with the look and feel of, for instance, a Unix box but also running NT and mainframe applications.
