Transarc Corp, Pittsburgh has signed Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG to provide a MIPS Technologies Inc reference implementation of its Encina transaction processing monitor. Siemens Nixdorf is putting Encina up under its Sinix Unix System V.4 implementation which runs on the Intel Corp and MIPS Technologies Inc Unix boxes it manufactures. Encina is based on the Open Software Foundation’s Distributed Computing Environment – Siemens Nixdorf was responsible for the System V.4 implementation of that technology. Encina will be available from Siemens Nixdorf in the second quarter of next year. Presumably it is being offered alongside – rather than instead of – Siemens Nixdorf’s existing UTM transaction processing monitor. Originally developed for its BS2000 mainframe systems, UTM was transferred over to Sinix, and Siemens Nixdorf has recently expended considerable effort getting the environment up on Hewlett-Packard Co, IBM Corp and Silicon Graphics Inc Unix boxes.
