Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG plans to increase personal computer production at its plant in China to 1,000 units per shift from 100 units as soon as possible, Siemens Nixdorf PC Ltd general manager Michael Maquet told Reuters. He wants to increase annual output to over 100,000 per year from 20,000 within five years. The plant at Fuqing in Fujian province is the company’s production base for the Asia Pacific region, meeting 70% of its regional demand for personal computers; the balance is imported from Europe. It makes desktops and small tower systems using Intel Corp 80486 processors and will add Pentium systems within the next month. The plant is a joint venture with Chinese monitor maker Top Victory Electronics Ltd, which has a monitor factory in Fuqing. The company currently claims 2% of the Asia Pacific market, but hopes to increase that to 5% in five years. Siemens Nixdorf also plans to produce personal computers in India and Indonesia and says it will be establishing configuration centres throughout the Asia Pacific region.
